The reading is for urine light chains. They are not sure what it all means, yet, but there are tests ongoing.

Meanwhile, he continues to get liver check-ups and medication check-ups.

Recently, dad also had an odd occurrence; retinal detachment! He had a bit of a laser surgery to repair, and things are going well, but there may be more adjustments that need to be done.

OK. First of all, Me, my Mom, and
Brother Tim can never express enough the love that we have for Terry -
and so very, very grateful to all our family and friends for all the
support and prayers that came his way during this time. In the past,
with our sadness of already losing Dad, Ted, and Tom , then now to see
Terry struggle with this illness, was at times a little more than we
could bear. We especially watched over Mom, who is just the most amazing
person with all this that has been handed in her direction, seems to at
times run circles around us all!!

She kept Terry going with his walks, which they both love to do, and spent
alot of quality time together.
The love and support of Lora, Susan, Kate, Terry Jr , and Deb, was also a
constant for him. I also truly believe that if it wasnt for his Grandsons
Colin and Braden, he would not have recovered so easily. Those two little
guys are just the lights in Grandpa Terrys life !!

I know he is feeling better, when he calls me in and complains about the
"monkey suit" he has to wear at my wedding next week. I wouldnt trade
those bitchin' phone calls for anything. I just say "too bad" and hang up on him!!
Our wedding day will be alot more than a celebration of Don and
I , but also a HUGE celebration of the wonderful gift that we have
our Brother here with us and doing well !!

Toni Frikken
<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5074478311329287490" style="FLOAT: left; a few choice words - in that I was rather late arriving when we first met). It is the positive impact he makes that motivates my more personal, heartfelt reflection from me to you.
<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5074478934099545442" style="DISPLAY: block; I was drawn to write when Terry's transplant anniversary was linked to a celebration of Father's Day. The connection is more than dates. There is such a strong passion as Terry talks about his family. It hits you as he is talking about his adult children and (what they may consider) their everyday work and accomplishments, or their goals, or his hopes for them. That spark is there time and again as he talks about more family and especially his grandsons. Unlike many, Terry doesn't need to be loud, showy, or offer lengthy explanations to reveal the power of his feelings. He does it simply, directly and yet very passionately.
<div class="MsoNormal" style="MARGIN: 0in 0in 0pt; It's hard for a tough-guy to feel tired (or "Tahrd" in Dad-Speak), but I keep telling him it's no wonder we're all afraid of chemical warfare, because it does BAD THINGS to you (his chemotherapy prophylaxis).

And THAT makes him a little worried that a full-time job will be hard, BUT...

TODAY he has another job interview (he's had a few, with paltry offerings, way below his value) and he's really looking forward to it.

In addition, his son, Terry, (bruddah) has connected Dad with a very cool RECRUITER who is offering her services to him. We think this is what it is, based on what Dad conveyed from the radiologists/pulmonologists. He went in last week to get his lungs checked, thinking maybe mild pneumonia from all the reduced immune system effect of the chemo, but then they found his diaphragm (not the baby-preventer, but the breathing muscle) on one side (unilateral, as it says in that write up) was expanding when it should contract, and vice versa (or VICEY VERSEY, as Dad would say)!

Ask him about his diaphragm--he's got a million of 'em!! Really.

He is also planning to go back to work soon! Yikes! It's good news and scary all at the same time.

Stay posted. Many have helped by adding their talents, including Deb, Kate, Terry, Jr., and Aunt Tuna (Terry's sister, Toni... so named by Kate when she was little. Terry, Jr. called her, Nnnnnaa, and still does sometimes!) I am 'like' so far behind placing any info at this site, I should be banned! But this will be a little blog from me.

This site is informative, sad, happy, entertaining, with comments from family and friends. If we had another 10 years, we wouldn't have time to thank everyone for their time, love, donations, and all-around support!

Mostly, we need and want to thank our children, Susan & Deb (yes, this time I didn't forget Deb, who is part of our family by virtue of love and commitment on her part, and because we love her, on our part!); Kate & Colin, (without our grandchildren, Terry may not have been able to keep such a positive attitude and do as well as he has); and Terry, Jr. & Braden (Terry has shown what an incredibly loving Dad he can be. Just as relaxed and knowing as Kate! It amazes me to see them accept responsibility as though they have always known what to do!!). I say this, because I was a VERY uptight mother... I still freak when the babies choke on anything... even water!

I won't go on to mention all the time, fundraising, handling finances and insurance companies, and exceptional love and patience, just to name a few things, that they have all "donated" to us! It is obvious if you read through this site.

Thanks... And we got a looksee at Pop firsthand.
[Photos: Dad with Braden, Mom with Colin.]

He is putzing around, doing little jobs. His hair is intact, though temporarily thinner. He looks and feels more tired. We are trying to tell him he's still tough. It's just that it is hard to fight a chemical! That's why chemical warfare is so scary...because you cannot use brute force against it.

His chemo is nearing the end. The end is in sight!! Considering EVERYthing, he's doing remarkably well. Liver readings are great. It is just the chemo side effects (fatigue, headaches, neuropathy--a tingling/numbness that is really uncomfortable in the extremities) that are the problem. So...again, all things considered, things are going well.

The other downside is BOREdom! Dad and mom have taken in a few foster dogs for the Michigan Humane Society (an amazing organization, really), and that is helping. Here is a picture of one of the babies they have currently:

This is Buddy. He is a GOOD dog. Really.

He also helped rehab a squirrel that one of mom's coworkers rescued from cold, rainy road after it was hit. It is still alive and now in a rehab center that mom dug up!

Dad is looking forward to going back to work. He'll feel more normal. And stop watching COPS.

I think he should go into a new field. Time to get away from carpet and do more people-only stuff. What do you think? What job would he be best at?

Send your feedback!

Bowling Fundraiser a HUGE success! He will have this done on Mondays and Tuesdays at Henry Ford Hospital, but only have a "treatment" every other week. We believe that he will have at least 6 treatments, which will mean about a 3-month time span. However, this will depend upon how he tolerates his chemotherapy. If he becomes ill, they may hold off on a treatment, or change medications, some people even land in the hospital if they become too ill, which would prolong the treatments. So, for now, we are speculationg on the best-case scenario.

On the off weeks, Terry will still have blood drawn and also see his oncologist to determine whether any changes in dosage need to be made and to monitor his overall health. Bloodwork is shared between the transplant doctors and the oncologist, obviously due to how cautious they all must be after a transplant.
Monday's medication is "Eloxatin" (Oxaliplatin injection). Once they start the IV, it takes about 90 minutes to complete the treatment. On Tuesdays, the second drug is administered. This drug is "Gemzar" (gemcitabine HCI). He will be receiving what are considered middle-of-the-road doses, so as not to cause too much trauma to his newly transplanted liver.
Common side effects of Eloxatin combination therapy are: Nausea, Vomiting, Fatigue/Tiredness, Diarrhea, Low White Cell count (neutropenia, which can lead to increased chance of infection), Low Red Blood Cell count (anemia, which can lead to fatigue), Neuropathy (tingling or numbness in fingers and toes). Because of the possibility of Neuropathy, Terry has to protect himself from the cold! He has to AVOID cold foods such as ice cream, cold drinks, or even adding ice cubes to any drink. This is kind of funny, in a weird way, as he is now trying to "detox" from ice cream because he was eating it EVERY evening, causing him to put on some pounds! Of course, avoiding cold weather, keeping hands out of/away from freezers/air conditioners (just in case he begins to lose feeling and can't tell how cold it is), as well as keeping socks on, plus the usual commom sense protections, all apply.
With Gemzar, the side effects include, in order of importance: Low White Cells, Low Platelets, Low Red Blood Cells, Mouth Sores or Sore Throat, Skin Irritation if the drug leaks out of the vein, Nausea and Vomiting, Allergic Reactions, which usually occur within the first 15 minutes or so of administering the drug...so we shall see tomorrow...though this was lowest on the list of side effects.
In the long run, there is much to be aware of, both positive...and negative. Dehydration, making sure to eat good foods with added iron, taking in lots of fluids (which he is supposed to be doing now anyway, while avoiding caffeine as much as possible!), not eating raw fruits and vegetables to avoid bacteria.
It is even more important than ever that Terry avoid groups of people/children due to risk of colds, flu, and all things bacterial that may cause infection. After all, his immune system is at risk from the transplant and ongoing anti-rejection medications, let alone adding chemotherapy! If you see him without a mask...feel free to lecture him. At lecture times, he prefers to suddenly do what he should, rather than listen, for the ten millionth time, to what he knows he should be doing! However, he still prefers to try to sneak around without the mask! *sigh*
Fever or diarrhea are especially something to look out for (causing dehydration), in addition to mouth sores. He may have sudden changes with memory (problems concentrating, remembering). All of this is temporary, and some sypmtoms may not even occur. Of course, we can still tease him about just being OLD, as opposed to the medication causing memory loss! (I, especially, can do this, because I am older than Terry!) As far as the nausea goes, he was told to expect some. Even with the medium range dosage, he was given two types of anti-nausea medications. One to try first, Prochlorper (Compazine Generic), on the mild side, and if that doesn't work, he takes the other, Zofran, a stronger anti-nausea drug.
One update on his transplant medications. Terry was taken off of the Prograf, as they felt it was what might have been giving him the "shakes." He is now on 150 mg of Cyclosporine (Neoral), twice a day. He is decreasing his Medrol (steroid) every two weeks, and should be weaned from this by 9-25-06...if all goes well. When he had his minor rejection, he was immediately put back up to the full dose of Medrol, and had 3 days of steroid IV's. Terry still takes Bactrim 3 days a week, which is the antibiotic. He takes his anti-depression medication, and this is vital, for any problems with the liver, even anything minor, can cause depression!
That's it for now...that's enough!
Thanks for everyone's kind concern...love and positive energy, cards, phone calls, donations...the world really is a wonderful place! And I should know, becuase I'm a Pollyanna...even when I don't want to be! *s* Lora

Chemotherapy and Fundraisers...Take 2!

First, CHEMOTHERAPY (want to get that over with first, of course!), but please read below to see where you can help raise funds! If he still has it...

He heard today that yesterday's routine bloodwork shows that his liver enzymes are "still out of line"; tomorrow, he will have to be at the hospital (Henry Ford in Detroit) by 8am for a liver ultrasound and biopsy. He's been feeling very exhausted, and having some bad tremors. They can be side effects of medication, or symptoms of other issues.

Kate's spinal tap is scheduled for Thursday morning.

Keep your fingers crossed. I bought him some sunscreen. He has to wear it all the time, as his anti-rejection meds make it so he is more susceptible to sun and also the cancers it can cause. Ask him if he's wearing it when you see him! (He'll LOVE it, REALLY..ha.)

While I am able to be here in Roseville for a few more days, I'll be making some face-to-face contacts with businesses and individuals who may be able to help do some fundraising!

Do you know anyone who would want to donate money, products or services to help us raise funds for the National Foundation for Transplants? All tests that they ran (CAT scans, MRIs, EKG, EEGs, Doppler tests of blood vessels/heart) have come back negative. Nothing to show. No tumor, no aneurism, no other scary things. Something did, indeed, happen with her brain. They found a "spot" on it; the doctor who discharged her says it could have been there for a while (!); they did tests for Multiple Sclerosis, and those have not come back yet. She is to follow up closely with her doctor. Apparently they think that a viral infection could have caused a minor stroke! So, we'll be researching some more; one of her friends said he did find that this is possible, doing some web research.

She feels much, much better; however, with unanswered questions, we are all very nervous! We'll be keeping a very close eye on her.

Thanks for all of your attention and support.

Short update...Fundraising, Dad and his daughter

Quick update. Dad seems to be doing somewhat better after three days of super-steroid treatments, but feeling kind of crappy. Keep him in your thoughts, and give him a call when you can.

More news: Today we found out Kate -- Terry's daughter, Kate, who has been taking care of the bulk of his bills and doing a lot of things for him (along with Terry, his son)-- has had a minor stroke. She is currently in the hospital, and they will be running many tests on her until they know exactly what has happened.

Needless to say, since Dad cannot go to the hospital (due to his suppressed immune system), he is really having a harder time with this. Mom is also even more extended than usual, so if you can, please give her your love and attention. The rest of us (his mother, sister, me! and more...) need your love, too.

On another important front: As you may remember, the non-profit set up as Friends for Terry is not really a non-profit fund, yet. If you made a contribution, it is not tax-deductible. However! We have found an organization that we will be working with that IS a non-profit, so that all donations will be tax-deductible; also, they will help us fundraise and -- best yet -- they disperse funds that Dad will need.

Stay tuned, but here is a link to the organization: National Foundation for Transplants. Many of the links were not working last i was there, but try it out. Look at "Find a Patient" to see what we'll be listed under.

When we have Dad's profile up and running, we'll let you know.

If anyone would like to be part of the Volunteer Fundraising Committee for this, please email me! sfrikken@yahoo.com

Take care, and thanks for being part of this!

Medical Updates

On Monday (7-10-06), Terry found out that his liver enzymes were up. (Terry calls them "enzynes"...another "Terry-ism"...hee hee.) Not into the dangerous area, but "up," meaning not necessarily desirable. Also, his oncologist called to say that he would not begin chemotherapy until the middle of August. We were under the impression that it was beneficial to begin chemo right away, due to finding eight more masses (in addition to the three we knew about before transplant) in his "old" liver, which was examined after the transplant.

Today, Terry had his bloodwork done, and then had a visit with one of the hepatologists. We told him of our concerns about the chemotherapy delay, especially since the liver enzymes were elevated. He agreed, saying the oncologist is usually not anxious to proceed with chemotherapy until the patient is as strong as possible. Since Terry is miles ahead in recovery, the other doctors feel he can begin sooner. They will notify the oncologist of this. We should find out in a day or two when the chemo will begin.
Also, the hepatologist told us that "all of his readings" were elevated, but we should not be alarmed. I asked if that indicated rejection, as we were told this is extremely common while patients recover. They lose or gain weight, become more active, medications change, etc., so rejection can occur. The doctor said, "Yes," this usually indicates some rejection and not to worry. HOWEVER, they will do an ultrasound tomorrow morning at 8:30 a.m. to see...if they can see...what is going on, if anything. Terry will then wait around to see if they want to do a biopsy, which is worrisome, but we were told this is not uncommon as they always want to make certain everything looks okay.
They decided not to decrease his Medrol (a steriod), so he is to stay at 8 mg. of this until told otherwise. He doesn't have to take the oral "antibiotic" anymore as soon as it runs out, which should be next week. So, he will be down to Medrol (steroid), Prograf (anti-rejection), Celexa (for depression), and Bactrim (eliminates bacteria...ex: helping prevent urinary tract infections, as the anti-rejection drugs suppress the immune system). He has pain medication, if needed, which he doesn't take often, and a mild sleeping pill, as needed.
That's about it for now. More when we find out what tomorrow brings. OH! Except he can cut the grass, wearing a mask. He can golf "a few rounds" of golf, with mask, I assume. (Not fond of all those golf-course-chemicals used to green everything up.) Terry then asked, "How about 9 holes of golf?" Smiling and hoping to sub on the golf league he can't play on this year.
The doctor answered: You won't hurt the liver, but you could strain muscles, incision, and so on, which are not in shape, and then end up in some real pain and difficulty. "AND, I would rather have you play 4 holes now, so that you can still be golfing 18 holes...10 years from now!" That's why he's the doctor!
Amen...Lora

This Is A Nice Way To Check In...

...with Terry's transplant and upcoming chemotherapy. Susan (the oldest), is placing most of the updates at this site, so you will enjoy what you read, as well as be informed about Terry's progress. Susan's partner, Deb, has provided much backup, research and technical help, with links, etc. A DEB SECRET: Deb ACTUALLY reads all of the manuals that come with products! We ask Deb a lot of questions! *s*

NOTE: Originally, we thought our fund had been set up as a non-profit fund. However, as Kate (middle child), who is handling any funds raised, found out from the IRS, you can't have a non-profit fund for just ONE person. Non-profit would have to be for the benfit of a group of people. So we apologize for any misconceptions concerning this fund...which IS a taxable fund! However, Kate and the rest of the kids (kids to me...adults to the world!), have hopes of turning this fund into a true non-profit source, once their Dad no longer has need of it!
Terry, Jr. (the youngest) and his students, friends, co-workers, have already done so much to help us out. His varsity softball team/students, through a surprise T-Shirt sale fundraiser and their efforts of making his Dad's plight known, PLUS, the Downtown HoeDown fundraising weekend (all explained in previous entries), have raised nearly all of the funds accumulated so far!
You see, each of our children have dedicated themselves to taking over the added burden caused by their Dad's transplant! It frees me up to do the chores Terry is not allowed to do. For example, avoiding bacteria and infection is PRIMARY! No gardening, touching dirt, no picking up dog POOP (*sigh*), no cleaning the bird cage, no fooling around in the garage, which is rather dank and dusty, etc. I still work full time (as do they!), so our children have given us an extraordinary gift...of time and task...and love!
Susan, as you can see by the website, has concentrated much time and effort on her Dad, as well as working with Deb on a fundraiser, which I am sure they will advertise when they are ready. Susan lives in Wisconsin, so being distant can make it difficult for her.
Kate has taken on the Blue Cross system. She fields all of our paperwork for reimbursing monies we have spent on all types of co-payments, etc., and she has taken care of her Dad's extensive prescription ordering...which is so major it has taken on a life of its own! She is also working on the cookbook fundraiser!! More to come on that, also. Not to forget, providing Grandpa with Colin, who gives us both hours of entertainment and love!
Terry, Jr. has done the two fundraisers mentioned earlier, and will undoubtedly help Terry, Sr.'s friends organize a golf outing fundraiser. And he has told us we can "work" at one of the Lion's games this year, working a concession as we did for the HoeDown. PLUS, he cuts the grass! (Thank you...thank you!)
There are so many more things to mention! Like Terry's Mom, Lois, checking in on her son, taking him to the hospital, sometimes twice a week so I don't have to miss work (I don't get paid if I'm not there), and running errands for and with him. All of the phone calls and cards Terry has received, and is receiving, are the best medicine of all! It's difficult to thank everyone when you are on a treadmill, but we all...want you all...to know how much your efforts means to our family.
So...Please know that we are beyond grateful for everyone's attentions and intentions.
Thanks...With Love...Lora

Independence day for Dad! Tuesday surgery, Sunday discharge. Though he had some trouble, you know that he was REALLY happy to hear that. He wants it done, like NOW. This is the same man who, walking to all the monuments on the Washington DC Capital Mall, tries to see them all in one day. Surprised!?

He's also been WALKING AROUND THE BLOCK; he gets mad that he gets tired. But he's doing it.

The visits are pretty much to track his bloodwork and the liver transplant. The oncology tracking will also be part of his follow up care. They track bloodwork twice per week. The medications are many, as are the side effects, interactions, and guidelines for use. Lots of heady stuff. We looked them all up on the NIH's Medline site. Check this out for an example of just one medication and it's issues: http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/uspdi/202914.html

The surgeon on the transplant team who did the surgery, as well as the last 2 of his 3 tumor removals, wants dad to have CHEMOTHERAPY after he heals. This is because if there is any cancer at all in his system, they can get it. All signs point to no cancer. There was no cancer in:

the lymph nodes right near his liver, or

in the blood vessels of the "old" liver.

This is great because they'd likely show up here if there was metastases. There was new cancer growing in the old liver, though, so this is definitely a good idea. The anti rejections drugs, one in particular, not only inhibit the action of the immune system (needed to fight diseases and infections), but one actually encourages cancer to grow if any is present (also need to be careful in sunlight as skin cancer is much higher risk).

SO MUCH GOING WELL! Just lots to be aware of.

HE NEEDS YOUR DISTRACTIONS. TV is not enough (or really edifying enough), and though he's got audio books, book-books, and even a plug-and-play Ms. Packman game, he really needs to share his thoughts, talk and be busy not trying to lift things or get into trouble!

THANK YOU!

Fundraisers...Get involved!

Many of you know that Friends for Terry was created by Kate (daughter of 1974 vintage) to raise funds for Dad so that he can pay for his medical expenses, both direct (copays, etc.) and indirect (nutritional needs, medical supplies not covered, other therapies).

This is to share with you a little bit about what fundraisers have happened, what is happening, and what is to come!

1--Terry, Jr. (son, circa 1976) is a teacher at Milford (MI) High School. Meds. Other patients.

Dad got home last night to a housefull of dogs, children, a grandchild, wife, mother, sister and her fiance. Barbecue was going, and dad got to sit in his chair.

It was an uncomfortable time, trying to get into a position that wasn't painful. In the hospital, he didn't have much pain, but he was uncomfortable in his whole upper back and abdomen. As he had to have his diaphragm cut away from the liver adhesed to it (the old one), we thought maybe that might be part of the problem.

Today, the 19th, we went back to the hospital's Hepatology clinic for the first follow up. His doctor says all things look good so far. Later today, he'll hear about the bloodwork they did today (checking the antirejection drugs and other levels) and the X-ray they did of his abdomen (to make sure there's nothing blocking his G-I tract). Hopefully it is just slow moving.

At the hospital, we met up with many other patients there for their follow up visits for transplant. Many, if not most of whom we met (and their families) were also liver transplant patients. One woman had had two transplants, and was still having some difficulties. Her first transplant was rejected and she had a second transplant a year later. Another man was there with his wife/partner. They live in Grand Rapids, MI, but this hospital was the closest they could get. (That's about 4-5 hours away.) They had to come in twice a week for bloodwork, and their insurance didn't cover housing needed when they stayed nearby.

The medications he is on are many; several antirejection medications which reduce the ability of the immune system to reject this new organ. The downside of this is that his immune system is reduced. He wears a mask when around sick people (who stay away, ideally), children, pets and out in public. Also, he isn't allowed to work in soil, with animal clean up; pets have their feet wiped well everytime they go out/come in. This makes an anti-yeast (thrush, happens in the mouth) medication necessary. Also, pain medication, fiber medication to help with regularity. Other medications total 10. Some are taken "as needed", but most are necessary. The anitrejection medications are for life. The schedule of medications is quite complicated, as you can imagine! He'll be using one of these: http://tinyurl.com/rq5w7

Check out the linked websites for more information!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://friendsforterry.blogspot.com/2006/06/daddys-first-day-home-happy-fathers.html' title='Daddy's first day home: Happy Father's Day. He had been feeling some pressure, trouble breathing and upset stomach for some time. Hard to figure out what was wrong because there were other chronic things --like ulcers in the past--that confused things.

Except for the big bump under his ribcage.

After his knee surgery recovery, Dad went to get the bump checked. Turned out to be one liver cancer tumor. They said it must have been growing for a good year. This is primary liver cancer. Usually, this kind of cancer only occurs in people with hepatitis or cirrhosis (badly damaged livers) or people in countries without much food hygiene. Dad is none of those. Usually, people with liver cancer have it because it is a metastatic site of another cancer; in other words, they have had cancer somewhere else first (breast is common) and it spreads to the liver.

That was removed right away. The recovery was difficult, being an abdominal surgery, and dad with his knee newly healed, and being an antsy, hop-to-it kind of guy.

He was monitored closely...so far so good!

However, just under a year later, they discovered another tumor. He was referred to Henry Ford Hospital, this time, as the oncology surgeon at Karmanos (both in Detroit, MI) said he would be unable to remove this new tumor, as it was even closer to one of the major blood vessels of the liver. Surgery, again in November of 2005. They said all looked good, and they got it all this time. Surgery was actually done by a transplant surgeon.

By early 2006, there were more tumors. Surgery again in February of 2006. This last time, they burned them, instead of cutting the liver. More cutting means more scar tissue. Though the liver regenerates, it needs time and takes energy. Also, as the liver is the body's cleaner, his body has been without a full cleaner! So, burned out the tumors, but they did return, more quickly.

As it was not helping to keep performing surgery, and always a risk, his doctors put him on the liver transplant list in Michigan.

He was to have a therapy called Therasphere, which is localized radiation "beads" which would shrink the tumors while he was waiting. Just as he was about to have the procedure, one of the transplant team nixed it, saying he'd have to wait 30 days after that to receive a liver, and if one came up during that time, he could not take it. So, he waited.

He was becoming more physically uncomfortable. He and the family were just about to head back to the team of physicians (oncologists - hepatologists - transplant docs) to say "What is the long term plan? What are we supposed to do while we are waiting and what happens if we don't get one soon and I'm really uncomfortable...!"

And the liver came.

The call came early in the morning of Tuesday 13th of June.

Recovery, Room #

It is Friday 16 June in the morning. As of last night, Dad was doing really well. He even called us to say he was feeling better than in the morning.

There had been some trouble with his IV that morning (one of the two had been removed, but this was apparently saline) ; his hand was very swollen (and still was by the time of his phone call). The line had not been put in correctly.

By the evening, they still had trouble putting one in, but they got one in. His three remaining surgery drains were removed. His 100 staples in his incision (luckily, they didn't have to cut vertically--up/down--as that is harder to heal) look great. Far as that goes, anyway!

He's now in Room # F331 at Henry Ford Hospital.

He's eating liquid meals on his own, ready to get up and get out of there.

The road to recovery will be good, I think. Your help is needed!

Day #2 after transplant

Day # 2 after transplant, and it looks like Dad is going to be moving to the main floor (non-ICU)! Yesterday, already off of his respirator, he's moving around his bed on his own (wincingly, albeit), and drains are out, stats are good! This is definitely a quick post, but just so you know!

He is currently at Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit, MI. When he moves to his room, he'll be able to use his cell phone. The # is 586-524-9797.

Will give more information, soon, on the journey to this point, and afterward!

Many thanks, and love from us all.

PS--If you would like to receive information via email, please email Susan Frikken at sfrikken@yahoo.com. Here, you will be able to find out more information about Terry Frikken, his family and their journey through this adventure in living with primary liver cancer, liver transplant and recovery.

Kate Frikken (his daughter), with the help of Toni Frikken (his sister), created a non-profit fund called "Friends for Terry". Thus, the name of this blog!

"Friends for Terry" was created to find funds to cover the extensive costs associated with recurring liver cancer and liver transplants . These expenses include costs not covered by health insurance such as nutrition consultations, mental health support and various copayments. Expenses also include loss of income post-surgically. Our Dad, Husband, Grandpa, Son and Brother, Terry Frikken is the inspiration for this fund , but your contributions will continue to fill the gap in resources for those facing liver transplant. Friends for Terry is a non-profit, fund and your donations are tax-deductible.

Thank you for being an ongoing part of this journey. It gets harder the longer it goes on, so we appreciate your ongoing love and support!
